The Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction District will hold its first household hazardous waste collection event for the season on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at the Porter County Expo on East Division Road in Valparaiso from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CST. Attendees are welcome to enter through Gate 3. The event will also include a free gas can swap. Porter County residents can trade in old gas canisters for 2.5 gallon environmentally friendly gas canisters. Supplies are limited. Gas cans will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition to household hazardous waste, Porter County residents can throw away clean, dry plastic bags, plastic wrap, grocery bags, and plastic wrap. Water softener bags will not be accepted for recycling. Items NOT accepted at this event include electronics, latex paint, tires, BBQ propane cylinders and large containers over 55 gallons. For those unable to attend on May 7, the second household hazardous waste collection for Porter County residents is scheduled for Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Portage High School on the 6th, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CST.
