America Recycles Day is November 15
It seems that every day of the year is designated as some kind of feast day. November 15 every year is no exception, and it’s “American Recycling Day”. America Recycles Day began in 1994 as a way to promote recycling and encourage people to be more aware of what they consume and throw away. Today we hope to remind you to recycle and help you understand how to recycle directly at our 24 public recycling bins placed throughout the county for your use. Find locations on https://lickingcounty.gov/depts/recycling/location.htm.
Why should I recycle?
Almost everything we make on this Earth comes from the Earth. Simply put, we have to dig into the ground to get metals, minerals or oil (used in plastic production), we cut down trees to make paper, and we use sand to make glass. The recovery of these objects pollutes, consumes energy and costs money. Recycling – or turning existing items into new items – what we have already produced reduces pollution, saves energy and costs less. By recycling, we also put less waste in landfills. Here are some examples of energy savings:
· You can run a 100 watt light bulb for 4 hours with the energy saved by recycling a glass bottle
Recycling an aluminum can saves enough energy to watch 2-3 hours of TV
Recycling is easy
Licking County Recycling provides “mixed” recycling bins for residents to use. This means you can put all your recyclables in one container without separating them. Bin locations are listed on our website listed above. Some communities have already incorporated curbside recycling into their garbage collection fees (Village of Granville, Pataskala and Johnstown), and others have curbside recycling as an additional option (Townships: Etna, Granville, Union and Village of Hebron) . If you live outside of these areas, check with your waste hauler for curbside recycling availability. (The list may not be complete.)
What to recycle
Remember that we only accept five types of materials for recycling at our public collection sites. Please recycle only the following items:
· Paper and cardboard
· Boxes
metal cans
Glass bottles and jars
Plastic cans and trays
See our full guide and a more comprehensive list of accepted items on our website below.
Licking County Recycling is financially supported by the CFLP Solid Waste District (Coshocton, Fairfield, Licking and Perry Counties) and Licking County Commissioners. Funding for our solid waste district comes from waste disposal and production fees paid by waste haulers when using landfills. This money is then distributed to the counties for recycling education and awareness.
