Mangaluru: A group of students led by Hani HR, Class X student at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Mudipu, started a campaign to collect used milk and curd packets for recycling. For two months, the students have been working on the project.
Hani HR said, “We started this campaign about two months ago. About 10 students from the Green Warriors group, a group of like-minded students who have taken various green initiatives, started collecting packets of milk and curds. It all started, after we received a WhatsApp message, indicating that the milk and curd packets could be recycled, and thus reduce the pressure on the environment.
“We contacted Shakti Plastic Industries, who assured us to organize the collection of the packets. We even went to a few houses in Yekkur, asking people if they would agree to collect packets of milk and curds and tell us Unfortunately, the response has not been encouraging. In addition to 10 Green Warriors members, packets of milk are being collected from 10 other homes, and we hope to deliver the packets to the company within a month,” he said. she declared.
Vasanth Kumar, southern director of The Shakti Plastic Industries, said the company has extended its support to students. “We collect waste milk and curd from students, process it into pellets, and then produce packaging material,” he said.
Like Hani, her junior at school, Meghashree from Puttur, has also started this initiative in her home and neighborhood. “This is just a small initiative. We plan to collect newspapers and donate them to a company that makes eco-friendly pencils. We are working on how to approach this reader. Visiting homes and explaining to people the importance of collecting plastic packets is definitely not easy. While in many homes people refused to listen to us, in a few homes our initiative was appreciated,” she said.
