Jackson County Recycling and Reduction Coordinator Kim Shuler will speak in the Community Hall Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. It is a universally recognized truth that recycling is important, however, recycling is not universal. What is the reason behind this? Shuler will explain the general recycling process for Jackson County and provide resources for office, home, school and community recycling. She will also talk about the composting process and how to get started. This program is free and open to the public.

The Balsam Mountain Trust talks about birds and owls at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 29 in the Community Hall. This installation of Wild Wednesdays is part of the summer apprenticeship program. Anyone interested in the Summer Learning Program can register by visiting the Youth Services desk on the first floor of the library, or going to the link www.fontanalib.org/summer, or downloading the ReadSquared app.

Tim Carstens presents his show Birds in your Backyard and Beyond at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 30 in the Community Room. In his own words, Carstens talks about his program, “What I can do is show you beautiful birds that you can find in your backyard in Jackson County, at some local birding hotspots in nearby and, if we have time, in other places.. Along the way, I can show you some of the best ways to find, observe and identify birds from here and elsewhere”.

Carstens has lived in western North Carolina since 1990. He was a librarian at Western Carolina University from 1990 to 2016. Since retiring from the library, he has been able to spend more time doing hiking, paddling and pursuing his passion for bird watching and bird photography.

These programs are free and co-sponsored by the Friends of Jackson County Public Library. For more information, call the library at 586-2016. The Jackson County Public Library is a member of the Fontana Regional Library (www.fontanalib.org).
