Beware, Sault Ste. Marie Police are urging after receiving multiple reports of a bear and cubs near homes and sheds in the Alworth Place area.
In a news release today, police say callers did not report the bears being aggressive or acting threatening.
In emergency situations, such as a bear entering a schoolyard when school is in session, a bear stalking or lingering somewhere, or attacking or injuring pets, call 9-1-1 .
In non-emergency situations, such as a bear wandering an area or checking garbage cans, breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored, or knocking down a bird feeder, use the provincial Beware of bear, 1-866-514-2327 or TTY 705-945-7641.

Police have received multiple reports of a bear and cubs in the Alworth Place area. Bears have been seen near homes and sheds in this area.
The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry was notified via the Bear Wise report line. Callers did not report the bears being aggressive or acting threatening.
If you encounter a bear, stop. Do not panic. Stay calm. Generally, the noisier the bear, the less dangerous it is, provided you do not approach it. The noise is meant to “scare” you and acts as a warning signal. Back up slowly keeping the bear in sight and waiting for it to leave.
