MADURAI: The municipality has decided to expand its research team to solve the nagging problem of garbage in the city. It was decided to recruit 32 experts at a cost of ₹51.5 lakh through a resolution passed at a recent board meeting. The team of four GIS data analysts, 16 solid waste management area managers and 12 research associates were hired for a seven-month term.
The municipal corporation already has a 25-member team undertaking studies, officials said. The city’s corporation fares no better in the annual Swachh Survekshan, which ranks cities nationwide on cleanliness. Madurai came 47th in the 2021 Swachh Survekshan survey compared to 42nd in the 2020 survey.
The society’s commissioner, Dr KP Karthikeyan, said the experts will provide implementation support to the society. They must discover the pattern of accumulation and handling of solid waste. Madurai has behavioral issues like littering the streets and open places during the day. “We need a scientific approach to solving problems such as waste collection, separation and management,” he said.
The civic body decided to adopt the best practices followed in other cities. A research team is one of the practices the company has decided to adopt. “We will become one of the cleanest cities in the country with continuous efforts even if it will take time,” he added. According to the adopted resolution, solid waste management activities are carried out under Swachh Bharat Mission 1.0. Under SBM 2.0, society must adopt scientific methods to separate solid waste and process it. A scientific approach is necessary and therefore sought the approval of the council to recruit the team of experts.
