Machinex has embarked on a new project with long-time partner Rumpke Waste & Recycling that includes the delivery of an all-new residential 56 ton per hour (TPH) single-stream system to Columbus, Ohio. The new materials recovery facility, which will feature the most advanced automation available, will also be one of the largest dedicated single-stream residential systems in the country.
Rumpke renewed its commitment to the local community as well as the State of Ohio by announcing the construction of the technology-focused Rumpke Recycling & Resource Center. The facility will not only feature state-of-the-art technology, but will also house a research center for students as well as an educational space to educate and educate about the environment.
The upcoming system, entirely designed and equipped by Machinex, will efficiently sort all recyclable materials, including paper, cardboard, HDPE, PET, PP and mixed plastics from local residential and commercial curbside collection. Achieving efficient sorting of all these materials while maximizing purity rates, interconnectivity and high-tech equipment were key requirements for Rumpke’s system design.
This 160,000 tonnes per year MRF will include several types of sorting equipment, with an emphasis on high automation to maximize recovery. The system will be equipped with 18 MACH Hyspec optical sorters for fiber, non-fiber and plastic sorting, as well as 3 SamurAI sorting robots on the container lines for quality control. Automation will dramatically increase material recovery and purity without additional workers. Machinex engineers developed a multi-step solution involving material sizing with trommels to drive the appropriate material to its corresponding sorting equipment.
According to Chris Hawn, CEO of Machinex Technologies, “Working with Rumpke and their team has always been a pleasure. With large projects such as this, it is important that any buyer does their due diligence to understand market changes and the equipment needed to meet past, present and future challenges. We were fortunate to remain Rumpke’s chosen supplier and with the level of automation provided, they are ready to handle what the future may bring.”
