Goa: Congress raises issue of beach cleanup scam

Panaji, Sep 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) After BJP MPs and ministers collected rubbish from beaches in the coastal state on Saturday, Congress raised questions about the beach cleanup contract, calling it a scam.

“BJP leaders have collected huge rubbish from various beaches to mark the ‘Clean Coast, Safe Sea’ campaign across Goa. This proves that the government appointed beach cleaning contractor is doing nothing,” said Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Chairman Amit Patkar.

Patkar said Goa Lokayukta ordered an investigation into the beach cleaning scam being carried out by the two companies. “Similar irregularities were seen in the subsequent contract. Today Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Minister of Tourism Rohan Khaunte saw for themselves that the current contractor is not carrying out any work and hence the rubbish is piled up on various beaches in Goa,” Amit said Patkar.

“I urge new BJP MPs Digambar Kamat and Aleixo Sequeira to ask the chief minister to scrap the beach cleaning contract and save almost Rs 60 crore from the state,” Patkar said.

Kamat and Sequeira recently switched to the BJP.

“I call on the Chief Minister to organize beach cleaning campaigns every week and engage local panchayats there. They will do the job cost-effectively and our beaches will also be kept clean,” Patkar said, adding that former contractors in Goa were doing the job for barely Rs 3 crore a year.
