City Offers Christmas Lights Recycling Program | Local

Rapid City’s Solid Waste Division is once again offering the public a recycling program for non-functioning Christmas lights by dropping them off in one of the many collection boxes that will be placed in various locations in Rapid City starting this week. -end of Thanksgiving.

Authorities strongly advise residents not to put lights in residential blue recycling bins or garbage cans, according to a press release.

“This is the time of year we encounter those string lights that don’t work as we decorate for the holiday season,” said Ria Harper, Solid Waste Awareness Coordinator. “We strongly encourage the public to place these fairy lights in the collection. boxes and not in garbage or recycling containers.

“We don’t want homeowners putting lights in curbside recycling containers because fairy lights are what we call ‘tangles.’ delays.

The public rendered 3,200 pounds of lights non-functional last holiday season.

Harper said the public can also light non-working string lights that may have been set aside this year for other holiday celebrations.

Starting November 26, Christmas light recycling containers will be available at the following locations:

MRF Office / Landfill Building: 5165 S. Highway 79

The bins will be located at these locations until January 31.
