Annual electronics recycling event at ETHS

The Town of Evanston hosts its annual “Evanston Recycles” event on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at Evanston Township High School, 1600 Dodge Ave.

The “pick up, drop off” event allows residents to safely recycle and donate a variety of items and shred documents.

This year, due to COVID-19, the City will only collect electronic waste, documents for shredding and medication. No other items will be accepted.

To participate, enter the drop-off line on Church Street west of Dodge Avenue and follow the signs to the drop-off area. Participants are asked not to line up before 8:00 a.m.

Health and safety restrictions

To ensure the health and safety of attendees and staff, all attendees must remain inside their car and unlock their trunk from inside their vehicle to allow city staff to unload items.

All material to be recycled must be placed in the back seat or in the trunk of participants’ vehicles. The mask is encouraged but not compulsory. Ill residents should not participate in the event.

Electronic recycling

The following electronic documents will be accepted:

  • Mobile phones
  • Computers (PCs and laptops)
  • computer screens
  • DVR/Cable Boxes
  • DVD and VHS players
  • Fax machines
  • Mice and keyboards
  • MP3 players and PDAs
  • Printers and scanners

Document shredding and recycling

Residents can bring up to five bank boxes containing paper documents to be shredded on site. Documents should be placed in a brown paper box or bag, and large metal clips and binders should be removed in advance. Staples and paper clips are acceptable. Document shredding is not available for businesses.

Medication Disposal

Unused prescription medications and expired over-the-counter medications generated at home will be accepted for disposal. Medications considered a controlled substance will also be accepted. Participants are advised to follow these guidelines for disposal of medications:

  • Medications must be in labeled containers; no loose pills
  • No needles or syringes (used or new)
  • Multiple medicine bottles should be carried in a transparent resealable storage bag

The Evanston Recycles event is supported by the Northern Cook County Solid Waste Agency.
